My Vani and Me

January 31, 2008

It goes without saying that most alchemists make a homunculus solely for afking. Some make them for the companionship of an inanimate object. Others do it for PvP and WoE dominancy. What did I use my vani for? See for yourself!

Among the four types of homunculi, Vanilmirths are simply divine. They’re graced with moderately high hp, as much flee as a non-thief agi class, and full use of the various bugs perks that comes with being a homunculus.

Without a doubt, my favorite flaw with homunculi is the fact that their flee isn’t reduced by tanking more than 2 monsters. This allows me to mob up incredible amounts of monsters and not have to tank anything myself.

I didn’t show it in the vid, but after dragging all those Galion to the entrance, I reenter the map with my vani out. This makes all the Galion instantly target it and allows our resident sage the green flag to explode the mob for some nice exps.

As far as Vanilmirths go, mine is just average. It’s only redeeming trait is that its luck is horrible, which is a good thing in my book. At lvl98, it makes a heck of a tank.

Being average doesn’t prevent it from being an awesome Vanilmirth though!

Computer Science

So I finally finished debugging my program, and I have to say, I’m so goddamn proud of myself. The program I’ve been working on for the past 6 or 7 hours non-stop is an implementation for a class that uses a doubly linked list. Putting technical jargon aside, what it basically is is a program that takes something (numbers, texts, etc.) and puts it into an unordered list along with more of that something. Lemme tell ya, it’s not as easy as it sounds in the specs.

It only took me two hours to build up the implementation. The other 4 – 5 hours came from debugging the 130 errors and 3 warnings when I tried to compile the thing. All in all, fixing an error is as easy as finding where it is and find out what went wrong, but as in most compilers (programs that make programs) the error messages are very vague. Even when you think you’ve fixed the problem, it pops up again and with 3 more problems. The normal human response is to freak out. So I freaked out.

I spent the rest of the time (about 3 hours) making sure that all the tests ran smoothly. This included more debugging and a good amount of rip-your-hair-out moments, but watching the final compilation of a 100% finished program is pure bliss. I included a sample of the implementation if you want to check out my “unique” style.

Hah, first post

I finally got around to making a more professional looking site for myself, but its still quite bare. I’ll get around to adding stuff later as I still have a project to complete. What I’m planning on using this website for is posting new videos or just posting anything that I feel like. But mostly vids. As for the vids themselves, I generally upload them to both Youtube and Filefront. If I post a vid, it’ll come with both a link to the Youtube version and Filefront for downloading the high quality version.

So I’ve been out of the loop for a while due to school and week after week of projects, and I thought that it would be fun to come back for a week or so. Next week’s programming project will be due in two weeks time rather than the usual one week. Being a professional procrastinator, I’ll probably put it off ’till the last three days or so. This gives me free time (omg!) to do whatever I want, and I want to play RO!

What the heck is RF Online?

January 26, 2008

In short, my winter 2008 fling. If you’ve been keeping track of my Ragnarok progress, you’d know that I’ve been playing for quite a long time. Not as long as some people, but long enough that I’ve downed $300+ on just subscriptions. Ragnarok winters are a very depressing time for me. Each year, I make a New Years resolution to quit playing Ragnarok and find a way to make up for all that lost time. Every year, I fail to keep at least one of my New Years resolutions. Guess which one?

This being my 4th winter, I decided to try out RF Online after doing a bit of research on it. Granted, I was initially going to play SCO, but as of Dec. 26, 2007, GalaNet shut down the servers. The science fiction element of SCO was what initially kept me interested in the game (not to mention the epic wars). Going for something in the same genre, I found RF Online.

RF stands for Rising Force, though noone really knows or care for what that means. Basically, you play as one of three races who are at constant war with each other for the control of mineral caches at the bottom of a mine. The unique thing, and probably the most tiring part of it as well, is the fact that there are major wars three times a day. Every day. That comes up to 21 potential times to fight in large scale PvP fights compared to the usual 2 times per week for RO. Naturally, I’m freaked out at the thought of having to attend wars at 11pm, 7pm, and 3am. Thankfully, I find out that none of this is mandatory. Phew. Well anyways, I decide to give RF Online a shot. Being a typical endgame player, I decide to choose the strongest DPS class that doesnt require billions of money or doesn’t rely on the use of AI monsters (homunculi be damned). And poof, I chose an Accretian Striker. The ability to one-shot another person is a gift. To the properly geared Striker, its standard.

So I spend a month leveling to lvl39, where I am right now. All this time, I’ve gotten PKed at least 3 times a day each and every day. Now don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I hate PKers or what they do. I hope to get revenge someday as well. What’s wrong about it is that PKers constantly camp exits and every damn leveling spot in the map. Well, ok, lets try moving to another map. They’re there too. There is absolutely no refuge from PKers if you want to actually level. Fortunately, I’ve only one more level before I can change class to Striker.
