Alright, Vacation’s Over

July 30, 2009

Time to get back to work, namely writing actual posts. Because I can’t afford to do any more one-character fillers.

Having now been on the highways of both the west and east coasts, I’ve seen my fair share of differences between drivers on both sides. Let’s start off with a few basic differences.

Speed: Being a native Californian, I can attest to the fact that drivers here rarely care about posted speed limits. It’s as if speed limit signs here are actually minimum speed limit signs. While driving along highways in New York and Maryland though, we saw people actually obeying the speed limit signs! Of course we only noticed it because we were doing 80mph and passing a good number of cars. There was one time where we even got stuck in a one-lane highway behind a car going exactly 55mph.

Traffic: I always thought traffic in LA and SF was pretty bad. Until we attempted to enter and exit New York City. Traffic was quite literally at a standstill as 7 lanes of traffic merged into 2. If you gave even the slightest bit of leeway, a whole entourage of cars would cut in front of you. With traffic this bad, it’s no wonder the drivers here are so stressed and aggresive. Even at turn signals you’d get potentially dangerous drivers that’ll actually turn behind you. Its hard to explain, so here’s a quick diagram to explain!

Left: Normal turns | Right: Crazy drivers

Weather: Not exactly related to traffic and cars, but it still amazes me. The weather on the east coast was simply horrible. The humidity made the air thick and hot while the thunderstorms in the area provided the region with constant rain and hail. Combined with the natural summer heat, this created a messed up weather system where it would be raining sleet heavily one moment, clear up immediately a few minutes later, and suddenly bump the thermometer up to 90+ degrees before it started raining again. And the worst part about it is that clothes you were wearing an hour ago simply become obsolete.

I’m actually starting to get used to EST times. This’ll help a lot when I get back to California and sleep 3 hours earlier than I usually do!

It was a little overcast yesterday while we were on the road. Some time into the drive, it started to rain. It wasn’t much to begin with, but pretty soon it started absolutely pouring. We couldn’t even see out of the windows for what it was worth. It continued to rain for about a minute before the sky cleared up almost immediately. And just 2 minutes after the first drops of water, it stopped raining completely and was even sunny. Really weird weather, honestly.
